Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde's 'Mother's Love' Captivates Pan African Film Festival Audiences

“Mother’s Love,” the highly anticipated directorial debut of Nollywood screen icon and TIME 100 honouree Omotola Jalade–Ekeinde, has recently made a significant impact at the Pan African Film Festival (PAFF) in Los Angeles, California. This screening marks another crucial step in the film's international rollout, building momentum ahead of its eagerly awaited Nigerian premiere on March 1st and subsequent nationwide theatrical release on March 6th, 2026.
PAFF, now celebrating its 34th year, stands as one of the most esteemed platforms globally for showcasing African and diaspora cinema. The film's inclusion underscores its growing international visibility, following earlier successful screenings at the Silicon Valley Africa Film Festival (SVAFF), the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), and the Dubai International Film Festival.
At its core, “Mother’s Love” is a poignant exploration of maternal resilience and the unwavering strength exhibited by mothers across diverse social classes. The narrative intricately delves into the complex and layered dynamics inherent in mother-daughter relationships, with a particular focus on the unique experiences of first-born daughters. Beyond this, the film fearlessly engages with profound themes of grief, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and the pervasive impact of social stratification.
The screening at PAFF was met with an enthusiastic audience, demonstrating strong support despite earlier heavy rainfall. Notable attendees included Haitian actor Jimmy Jean–Louis, Ose Oyamedan from Nollywood in Hollywood, Ashkan Tabitha of 90210 Network, and Dami Kujembola of Amplify Africa. A host of other diaspora creatives and staunch supporters of African cinema also graced the event.
Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde, who recently celebrated three decades in the film industry, traveled to Los Angeles specifically to represent her project at the festival. She was accompanied by her sons, Matthew and Michael Ekeinde, adding a personal touch to the event. For the evening, Omotola made a striking appearance in a custom couture design by Ade Bakare London.
The film itself weaves the compelling story of a young woman raised amidst privilege. During her National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year, she embarks on a journey that takes her beyond the familiar confines of her sheltered upbringing. In this new environment, she discovers a profound sense of purpose, her inherent resilience, and a clearer understanding of her own identity – a journey continuously guided by the enduring and powerful presence of her mother’s love. The impressive cast bringing this story to life includes Omotola Jalade-Ekeinde herself, alongside Ifeanyi Kalu, Noray Nehita, Lilian Afegbai, Nosa Rex, and Olumide Oworu.
