Olympic Gold Medalist Suni Lee’s Stunning Skin-Smart Fashion Revealed

For many, choosing an outfit is a simple act of self-expression, but for two-time U.S. Olympic gold medalist gymnast Suni Lee, it’s a delicate balance of comfort and confidence. Lee, 22, has lived with eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, since childhood. Her journey has involved working closely with her mother to manage the chronic skin condition. Despite improved management, certain clothing can still trigger flare-ups, causing dry, patchy, and itchy skin—a challenge particularly poignant in gymnastics, where leotards frequently expose her skin.
Eczema affects approximately 16.5 million adults in the U.S., yet it remains under-represented in popular culture. A study by the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative found that none of the 100 highest-grossing movies in 2023 mentioned eczema, underscoring the lack of visibility. For Suni Lee, this underrepresentation has historically contributed to feelings of isolation.
Dr. Alexandra K. Golant, a board-certified dermatologist specializing in atopic dermatitis, explains that eczema flares are often triggered by irritants such as heat, sweat, allergens, fragrances, and certain fabrics. Tight clothing, scratchy materials, or clothing with tags and seams can exacerbate symptoms. To reduce irritation, dermatologists recommend breathable fabrics like cotton, bamboo, silk, or Tencel, and loose-fitting garments to minimize friction.
Lee’s wardrobe choices reflect this guidance. She favors soft fabrics like denim and cashmere and uses long sleeves or hoodies to cover affected areas during flare-ups. Topical treatments further complicate dressing, as creams or ointments can stain clothing and require careful consideration.
For those with moderate-to-severe eczema, EBGLYSS® (lebrikizumab) offers a biologic treatment option. Approved for adults and children aged 12 and older, EBGLYSS targets inflammation from within and can be administered at home via prefilled injection pens. While Suni Lee is not currently on EBGLYSS, the medication represents a significant advance in eczema care.
Lee emphasizes that dermatologists, supportive stylists, and careful clothing choices allow her to maintain confidence, even on red carpets. She hopes that increased visibility of skin conditions in media and fashion will help reduce stigma, encouraging others to embrace their identity and enjoy their moments in the spotlight.
