The 2026 outdoor athletics season has concluded with Nigerian track and field leaving an indelible mark, characterized by broken records, historic gold medals, and unforgettable podium moments. This exceptional performance has culminated in automatic qualification for three of Nigeria’s individual stars and three formidable relay squads for the prestigious 2027 World Athletics Championships, set to take place in Beijing, China.
Nigeria’s hurdles queen, Tobi Amusan, meticulously wrapped up her 2026 season at the women’s-only Athlos meeting at StoneX Stadium in London. She secured a second-place finish, clocking a season’s best of 12.51 seconds in the 100m hurdles. In a highly competitive race against elite global talent, Amusan expertly fended off the Commonwealth Games champion Devynne Charlton from the Bahamas and Jamaica’s former world champion Danielle Williams, finishing mere hundredths of a second behind America’s Alaysha Johnson. Her consistent sub-12.60 clockings throughout the international circuit comfortably surpassed the automatic qualifying standard for the 100m hurdles, thereby securing her coveted spot in Beijing.
Kayinsola Ajayi’s meteoric ascent in global sprinting has undoubtedly been one of the most compelling narratives of the year. The 21-year-old sprint sensation delivered a powerful statement at the London Diamond League meeting, storming to a commanding victory in the men’s 100m with a time of 9.84 seconds, which notably equaled his own national record. In a thrilling dash to the finish line, Ajayi demonstrated his prowess by fending off reigning world champion Oblique Seville of Jamaica, who finished in 9.87 seconds, and Team GB’s Romell Glave, who clocked 9.97 seconds. Following his triumph at the NCAA Outdoor title, Ajayi’s repeated sub-10 performances against world-class fields have emphatically punched his ticket to Beijing.
Ezekiel Nathaniel has firmly established his reputation as one of the elite quarter-mile hurdlers globally. Nathaniel etched his name into history at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games by clinching Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s 400m hurdles, stopping the clock at an impressive 48.47 seconds. The 23-year-old powerfully pulled clear down the home straight, outperforming England’s Jake Minshull and Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson. With a lifetime best of 47.11 seconds this season, edging closer to the African record, his consistent top-tier individual times make his automatic World Championship qualification exceptionally well-deserved.
Matching the individual successes, Nigeria’s relay teams delivered standout performances at the World Athletics Relays held in Gaborone, Botswana, securing automatic qualification across three crucial events for Beijing 2027. The Women’s 4x100m Relay squad demonstrated their speed, clocking 42.94 seconds in Gaborone to earn their place. In a pioneering achievement, the Mixed 4x100m Relay quartet, comprising Favour Ashe, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Chidera Ezeakor, and Maria Thompson Omokwe, ran an African record of 40.24 seconds, sealing Nigeria’s qualification in this new discipline. Lastly, the Mixed 4x400m Relay squad, anchored by Chidi Okezie alongside Ezekiel Nathaniel, Taiwo Mary Kudoro, and Patience Okon George, executed a composed and strategic run to secure their well-earned spot at the World Championships.
