Oliseh's Controversial Osimhen Blame for AFCON Failure Sparks Fierce Debate
)
Former Nigerian captain Sunday Oliseh has sparked a heated debate following Nigeria’s exit from AFCON 2025, primarily by attributing the failure to star striker Victor Osimhen. Oliseh’s critique centers on a Round of 16 altercation between Osimhen and Ademola Lookman during the match against Mozambique, which he claims 'destroyed team chemistry' and ultimately contributed to Nigeria’s semifinal loss.
Oliseh insists that Osimhen’s world-class talent should not grant him a “license to destroy team chemistry” or publicly diminish teammates. He warns that a lack of discipline, amplified by fan culture, could erode the Super Eagles’ future success. Oliseh also criticized the team for celebrating a bronze medal, labeling it a “culture of mediocrity.”
However, this narrative is challenged by subsequent performances. In the quarterfinal against Algeria, Nigeria delivered a dominant 2-0 victory, with Victor Osimhen scoring and assisting. Ademola Lookman also excelled, creating multiple key chances. Both players were seen celebrating together, contradicting claims of fractured team spirit.
Analysts point to officiating as the more significant factor in Nigeria’s semifinal loss to Morocco. Ghanaian referee Daniel Laryea faced criticism for questionable decisions, including a yellow card that suspended Calvin Bassey for the following match and inconsistent foul calls. These external factors, rather than internal discord, are widely seen as decisive in Nigeria’s penalty shootout exit.
Regarding the bronze medal, many observers argue that finishing on the podium amidst hostile officiating and setbacks is an achievement, not a sign of mediocrity. While Oliseh’s Jagun Jagun-era legacy was defined by grit, critics view his current critique as an overreach that unfairly targets the team’s best player.
The incident with Osimhen during the Mozambique match involved him openly berating teammates Lookman and Bruno Onyeamachi for taking scoring opportunities instead of passing to him. While indicative of potential disciplinary issues, attributing Nigeria’s AFCON 2025 failure solely to this episode overlooks broader challenges in African football governance and officiating.
