Officers face probe over alleged ₦1.5m extortion in viral video

The Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG zone 9), Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a thorough and comprehensive investigation into the veracity of a viral video in which police personnel were allegedly seen extorting N1.5 million from their victim.

Zone nine comprised Imo, Abia and other states, with headquarters in Umuahia.

One Harrison Gwamnishu, in the viral video, alleged that some operatives of the zonal command’s Special Intelligence Arms Recovery Unit were extorting the said amount from some persons.

In a statement by the zonal command’s Public Relations Officer, Iheanetu Bruno Chukwudera, a Superintendent of Police (SP), and made available to The Guardian at the weekend, he also directed that if the outcome of the investigation indicted the officers, they should be sanctioned accordingly.

The statement reads: “The Zone 9 Police Command, Umuahia, is aware of a viral video by Harrison Gwamnishu alleging the extortion of one million, five hundred thousand naira (₦1,500,000) by operatives of the Zonal Command’s Special Intelligence Arms Recovery Unit.

“In response, the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Zone, AIG Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to verify the claim, identify those involved, and ensure that any officer found culpable is duly sanctioned.”

Bruno reiterated the unwavering commitment of the Police in instilling discipline and upholding professionalism, stressing: “The AIG reaffirms the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to discipline and professionalism, stressing that the Force does not condone unprofessional or corrupt practices.”

He also urges the complainant to come forward with relevant information to support the investigation and ensure a swift and just resolution.

“The public is encouraged to maintain trust in the Zonal Command and to report any acts of misconduct by its personnel for appropriate disciplinary action.”
