Odisha: Student Critical After Self-Immolation Attempt

Published 9 hours ago2 minute read

The health condition of the 20-year-old student from Fakir Mohan Autonomous College, Balasore, who attempted self-immolation on Saturday allegedly after prolonged harassment, remains extremely critical at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

Medical authorities on Monday confirmed that the victim’s kidney function has deteriorated sharply, necessitating dialysis. The procedure is being carried out under the guidance of experts from AIIMS Delhi through video conferencing.

Hospital sources said the student’s potassium levels had plunged to dangerously low levels, prompting the administration of essential vitamins and micronutrients.

“We are closely monitoring her blood sugar levels. She has suffered extensive internal organ damage, and we are providing the best possible round-the-clock care,” said an attending doctor at AIIMS Bhubaneswar.

A 10-member panel of specialist doctors from various departments has been formed to oversee her treatment continuously.

AIIMS Director Dr. Ashutosh Biswas stated that the student had sustained 90–95 per cent deep burn injuries, causing severe damage to her kidneys and respiratory system.

“She is on advanced life support and remains intubated in the intensive care unit (ICU). There has been no significant improvement since her admission. The next 24 to 48 hours will be critical,” Dr. Biswas said on Sunday.

Doctors have ruled out shifting her to another medical facility due to her unstable condition and the associated risks. Despite the efforts of a specialised critical care team, her vitals remain precarious. The medical team is striving to prevent infections and support failing organs through artificial means.

Meanwhile, the Odisha government has ordered a high-level inquiry into the incident. A three-member committee from the Higher Education Department is investigating possible institutional lapses and administrative failures.

Following the incident, FM College Principal Dillip Ghosh and Head of Department Sameer Kumar Sahoo have been suspended. Sahoo, accused of sustained mental harassment that allegedly drove the student to the extreme step, was arrested on Saturday and remains in police custody.
