Nvidia's Jensen Huang in High-Stakes China Summit: Charting AI's Geopolitical Future
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang concluded a significant visit to China, his third this year, engaging in high-level discussions with key Chinese officials. On Thursday, Huang met with China's Commerce Minister Wang Wentao, who conveyed his hope that multinational companies like Nvidia would continue to provide high-quality and reliable products and services to Chinese customers. Huang, in turn, affirmed the Chinese market's attractiveness and expressed Nvidia's willingness to deepen cooperation with Chinese partners in the burgeoning field of artificial intelligence.
During his visit, Huang also held meetings with Vice Premier He Lifeng and Ren Hongbin, chairman of the China Council for the Promotion of International Trade. Chinese officials consistently communicated their welcome for foreign companies to continue investing in the country, with Minister Wang reiterating China's unwavering policy of attracting foreign investment and emphasizing that the 'door to openness' would only widen.
A central topic of discussion was the supply of Nvidia's advanced AI chips to China, a subject intricately linked to U.S. export controls. The U.S. had reportedly informed Beijing that it would approve sales of Nvidia's H20 AI chips to Chinese customers. Huang noted that demand for the H20 chip, recently released from U.S. export controls, is high among Chinese clients, though no purchase orders have been fulfilled yet as the company awaits final U.S. government approval for export licenses.

Further demonstrating its commitment to the Chinese market, Nvidia announced the development of a new chip specifically for Chinese clients: the RTX Pro GPU. This new graphics processing unit is designed to be compliant with U.S. export restrictions and is tailored for applications in smart factories and for robot training purposes, showcasing Nvidia's strategic adaptation to the local market's needs and regulatory environment.
Beyond chip discussions, Huang also lauded the advancements in artificial intelligence within China. At a press conference in Beijing, he described AI models from prominent Chinese firms such as Deepseek, Alibaba, and Tencent as "world class," underscoring his belief that artificial intelligence is "revolutionizing" supply chains globally. Huang's visible presence and engagement during his trip, reportedly dominating Chinese social media, highlighted the importance of these interactions for both Nvidia and the broader AI ecosystem in China.
