NPP Figure Urges Party Reform, Warns Against Early Flagbearer Choice | News Ghana
In a detailed open letter, Kennedy argued against the current strategy of seeking a “unifying candidate” and criticized plans to select a presidential flagbearer as early as January 2026. He stated such early selection ignores the unpredictable nature of politics, comparing it to prematurely choosing a national soccer team.
Kennedy proposed fundamental changes to the NPP’s internal election processes. He advocated for primary elections open to all registered voters who declare affiliation or sympathy with the party within a designated period. This system, utilizing party databases and Electoral Commission records, would allow a broader base to select both parliamentary and presidential candidates, moving beyond the current delegate-based model.
The party stalwart emphasized structural renewal over reliance on a single figure. Kennedy asserted the NPP’s future success depends on empowering grassroots structures – polling stations and constituencies – to secure a parliamentary majority, not solely on the presidential candidate. He questioned the party’s hesitation towards open primaries, asking why voters trusted in general elections are distrusted internally.
Looking towards the 2028 elections, Kennedy framed the contest around “Democratic Accountability.” He warned both the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) under President John Mahama and the opposition NPP face voter judgment based on their governance and internal party conduct. For the NPP, he urged embracing the “NEW” in its name by seeking fresh ideas, humility, and leadership distinct from figures associated with the 2024 defeat.
Kennedy concluded with an optimistic vision, suggesting genuine reform could attract disaffected NPP voters who supported Mahama in 2024, alongside some NDC members, paving the way for an NPP return to Jubilee House with a parliamentary majority.
