NPP Divided? Bryan Acheampong Surges in Leadership Battle

Dr. Bryan Acheampong, a hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearership, has asserted that every presidential candidate must showcase resourcefulness and the capacity to mobilize support if they aspire to lead the party. Speaking to the media following his vetting on Tuesday, September 23, Dr. Acheampong addressed the concerns raised by some aspirants regarding the party’s GH¢4 million development fee. While critics questioned if the fee excluded less wealthy candidates, Dr. Acheampong maintained that it was a stipulated requirement with the forms, emphasizing a presidential candidate's need to demonstrate the ability to meet such demands. He added that the fairness or excessiveness of the fee is ultimately for the party leadership to determine, confirming that his team had fulfilled the requirement and was ready to launch their campaign.

Regarding the vetting process itself, Dr. Acheampong explained that its primary purpose was to confirm his eligibility as a presidential candidate under the party's constitution. Beyond this, the vetting also included inquiries into his vision for uniting the party and strategies for ensuring victory once he becomes the candidate. He stated that these questions were "answered square and fair," indicating a comprehensive discussion of his qualifications and leadership approach.

Further solidifying Dr. Acheampong's stance and vision, Andy Appiah Kubi, Special Adviser to his campaign, criticized the previous NPP administration for a perceived lack of discipline in public office, describing it as his "biggest disappointment." Mr. Appiah Kubi underscored discipline as fundamental to effective governance and presented Dr. Acheampong as the solution to this deficiency. He characterized Dr. Acheampong as a "disciplined one" who would expect every appointee to uphold high standards and deliver public service with the utmost discipline and accountability.

Mr. Appiah Kubi also highlighted Dr. Acheampong’s impressive track record, which includes significant philanthropic contributions in the fields of education and healthcare. He stressed that Dr. Acheampong's leadership style uniquely combines discipline, vision, and social impact. According to Mr. Appiah Kubi, this multifaceted approach makes him the most suitable candidate to restore public confidence in governance and successfully lead the NPP to victory in the upcoming 2028 general elections. His intellectual capacity and entrepreneurial record were also cited as key attributes.

Crucially, Mr. Appiah Kubi emphasized the paramount importance of unity within the NPP for its return to power. He stated that Dr. Acheampong's core belief is to "bring everybody on board," recognizing that no single campaign can achieve victory alone. He confidently positioned Dr. Acheampong as the candidate best equipped to unify disparate factions within the party, capable of bringing "the left and the right, back and forth together in a team to prosecute this collective agenda." These remarks come as the NPP prepares for a highly competitive flagbearership race, with a keen focus on candidates who can both unify the party and garner broad support across the Ghanaian electorate.
