NPFL Sanctions Nasarawa United with Fine and Banishment to Gombe Following Fan Violence

The Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) has taken decisive action against Nasarawa United, imposing a hefty fine of N6 million and relocating the club's home matches to the Pantami Stadium in Gombe. This stringent punishment comes in response to multiple breaches of the league's Framework and Rules during their recent match against Plateau United on Sunday.
According to the NPFL, Nasarawa United failed to ensure adequate security at the Lafia Township Stadium, leading to unauthorized access and harassment of the visiting team and match officials. Investigations revealed that Nasarawa United's supporters were responsible for disturbances that escalated into violent conduct, including the assault of Plateau United player Vincent Temitope. The league board emphasized the vicious nature of the attack on Temitope, stating it was with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm.
The sanctions imposed on Nasarawa United include a N1 million fine for failure to provide adequate security, another N1 million for failing to control their supporters, and a further N3 million fine for persistent breaches of the NPFL’s rules. Additionally, the club is required to pay N1 million in compensation and medical expenses for Vincent Temitope, bringing the total fine to N6 million. As a result, Nasarawa United will play their remaining home matches of the season at the Pantami Stadium in Gombe.
The NPFL cited Nasarawa United for breaches of Rules B13.52, B13.22, C9, and C11. The Chief Operating Officer of the NPFL, Davidson Owumi, reiterated the league’s zero tolerance for misconduct, emphasizing that the sanctions were imposed to underscore this stance. Nasarawa United has been given 48 hours to respond in writing, either accepting the rulings or electing to appear before a disciplinary panel.
