Noughties Nostalgia Sweeps High Street: Topshop's Return Ignites Vintage Fashion Boom

The renowned fashion retailer Topshop has announced its much-anticipated return to the high street, much to the delight of its loyal customer base. While the brand is re-establishing its physical presence and is already back online, fashion enthusiasts are advised to check their wardrobes for old Topshop garments, as many vintage pieces, particularly those from iconic collaborations, are now fetching significant sums on online marketplaces like eBay.

Since closing its physical stores in 2021, leaving a void on London's Oxford Street, Topshop has made its comeback online, with whispers of new UK shops on the horizon. This resurgence has sparked a trend where pre-loved items, originally retailing for under £100, are being sold for hundreds of pounds. For instance, one eBay user listed a 'rare Kate Moss and Topshop cropped tassel leather jacket' for £281, while another aimed for nearly £160 for a mini dress. A floral dress, dubbed 'Topshop Kate Moss Iconic Pansy Floral Print Tea Dress Glasto,' notably worn by fashion icon Alexa Chung and made from 100 per cent cotton, sold for an impressive £115. Other valuable pieces include a frilly dress listed at £172 despite signs of wear, a beaded flapper dress going for nearly £235, and another Kate Moss-designed maxi dress seeking almost £210.

Unsurprisingly, a substantial portion of these high-value items are linked to the legendary English supermodel, Kate Moss, who became synonymous with Topshop through her groundbreaking collaborations. Her partnership with the brand began in 2007, and her 2014 collection, inspired by 70s style, caused a frenzy on Oxford Street. Hordes of fans lined up to acquire pieces like fringed suede jackets, jumpsuits, maxi dresses, embroidered smock-tops, silk blouses, and graphic print kaftans. Kate Moss herself appeared at the launch event, joining Radio One DJ Nick Grimshaw, and expressing her excitement with a simple "Happy shopping." The collection, available globally, drew inspiration directly from Moss's personal wardrobe, defying her supermodel status and £40 million net worth, which isn't solely comprised of designer labels.

Sir Philip Green, then owner of Topshop, expressed his enthusiasm for Kate Moss's return in 2014, highlighting the success of their initial collaboration and the brand's global expansion since 2007. Moss herself conveyed her excitement about re-engaging with the design process and creating a new collection bearing her name, emphasizing London's prominence in fashion. While her past collaborations were highly successful, it remains uncertain whether the 51-year-old model will resume her design relationship with Topshop in its current phase.

Beyond its vintage appeal, Topshop continues to offer a wide range of womenswear and menswear online, with the full 2025 autumn and winter collection set to launch on August 16th, marking a new chapter for the revitalized fashion giant.
