The North Platte Police Department are reporting the death of a suspect after an altercation involving his family.

According to the North Platte Police Department, they responded to a call late Friday night after receiving a report that a brother shot and killed another brother in their shared residence. When the police arrived, the suspect shut the door and barricaded himself inside the home. Officers also learned that there was likely an eleven year old boy inside the residence. Negotiations began with the suspect and continued throughout the night, where the suspect confirmed that his brother was deceased and his eleven year old son was with him inside the house.

According to police, at around 9:45 the next morning the suspect was convinced to let the child be removed from the house and out of the area. Shortly after the child was released, negotiators heard something like a gunshot, and when law enforcement entered the house the 39 year old suspect was found deceased from an apparent gunshot wound. His 37 year old brother was also found deceased inside the house from a gunshot wound.

Due to law enforcement being present during the suspect's death, the case will be treated as an in custody death and presented to a grand jury. The investigation is now being handled by the Nebraska State Patrol.
