Nollywood Sensation: Funke Akindele's Blockbuster Film Crosses N1 Billion Mark
Nollywood actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has achieved a significant career milestone, as her latest cinematic release, "Behind The Scenes," officially crossed the ₦1 billion mark at the Nigerian box office. This remarkable accomplishment was confirmed by FilmOne Entertainment on Monday via its X handle, stating that the film has grossed an impressive ₦1,109,463,846 since its debut. This figure firmly establishes "Behind The Scenes" as one of the most commercially successful films in Nigeria's cinema history.
FilmOne Entertainment lauded the feat as historic, highlighting that "Behind The Scenes" is now recognized as the fastest film in West Africa to surpass the coveted ₦1 billion benchmark. Further solidifying its record-breaking status, the distributor revealed that the movie also achieved the highest single-day box office gross ever recorded on Boxing Day, pulling in a massive ₦129.5 million. The film has sustained strong momentum several weeks after its nationwide cinema debut, making it the highest-grossing theatrical release of 2025 to date.
The success of "Behind The Scenes" further extends Funke Akindele's unparalleled dominance in Nollywood. According to FilmOne, Akindele holds the distinction of being the only director to cross ₦1 billion at the box office three different times and is celebrated as Nollywood's highest-grossing producer of all time. Moreover, she has become the first filmmaker in the industry to deliver three consecutive ₦1 billion-plus films within a single calendar year, a record that remains unmatched.
Before reaching the billion-naira milestone, "Behind The Scenes" had already set multiple impressive records. Within just 12 days of its release, the film garnered ₦512 million, positioning it as the highest-grossing Nollywood title of 2025 at that time. Following advanced screenings on December 10 and 11, the movie officially opened in cinemas nationwide on December 12. It quickly surpassed the ₦200 million mark within days and went on to achieve what FilmOne described as "the biggest opening weekend of 2025," becoming the fastest Nollywood movie to hit ₦500 million.
The film's compelling narrative explores the theme of "black tax," delving into the significant social and financial pressures faced by individuals who support their extended family members. This relatable subject matter has deeply resonated with cinema audiences across the nation. The ensemble cast features Scarlet Gomez in the lead role, alongside Funke Akindele, Iyabo Ojo, Destiny Etiko, Tobi Bakre, Uche Montana, Uzor Arukwe, Ini Dima-Okojie, Adebowale "Mr Macaroni," Ibrahim Chatta, Kamo State, and reality TV personalities Handi and Wanni Danbaki, among others.
