Nollywood's Next Epic: Jide Babs Revives Oba Esugbayi's Legend!

Veteran Nollywood actor, Jide Kosoko, famously known as Jide Babs, has unveiled his latest cinematic endeavor, "Esugbayi Eleko." This 119-minute historical drama delves into the compelling narrative of one of Lagos’ most iconic monarchs, Oba Esugbayi Eleko, and his staunch resistance against the encroaching British colonial authorities.
The film, which received approval from the National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB) in August 2025, meticulously recounts the monarch’s unwavering defiance that ultimately led to his exile in 1925. Beyond the central conflict, the movie also illuminates Oba Esugbayi Eleko’s crucial alliances with prominent nationalist leader Herbert Macaulay and the influential market women’s leader, Alimotu Pelewura. Furthermore, it poignantly showcases the steadfast loyalty of the Idejo chiefs who stood by their king during these tumultuous times.
Jide Kosoko, drawing profoundly from his own royal heritage, describes "Esugbayi Eleko" as a deeply personal legacy project. He emphasized the painstaking attention paid to cultural authenticity throughout the production, evident in the language, elaborate costumes, and meticulously recreated set designs. Kosoko articulated his vision, stating, "Oba Esugbayi Eleko was not just a king; he was a symbol of resistance, wisdom, and cultural preservation," underscoring the profound historical and cultural significance he sought to capture.
Industry experts and observers are already hailing this project as a potential landmark achievement for Nollywood, suggesting it could pave new avenues for historical storytelling within the industry. There is widespread anticipation that "Esugbayi Eleko" will garner significant attention on the international festival circuit, elevating Nigerian cinema to broader global recognition.
