Born in Cameroon to Nigerian parents from Imo State, Richard Francis Duru studied Theatre Arts at the University of Port Harcourt, graduating in 1996. He embarked on his acting journey in 1989 with the film "Missing Mark." However, it was his iconic portrayal of Ahanna in Amaka Igwe’s 1995 crime drama classic "Rattlesnake" that propelled him to widespread recognition, cementing his status as a recognizable face in Nollywood and opening doors to numerous prominent roles.
Throughout his extensive career, Duru seamlessly transitioned from the early home video era to the contemporary generation of Nigerian cinema, appearing in scores of films across various genres including action, family dramas, social issue movies, and comedies. Some of his most memorable performances include:
- Rattlesnake (1995): As Ahanna, this film remains synonymous with Duru's breakthrough, establishing his prominence in the industry.
- Blood Money (1997): Playing Jude, Duru further solidified his place among the defining actors of the early home video era, also appearing in "Blood Money 2" in 1998.
- Nnenda (2009): His role earned him a nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role at the 2010 Africa Movie Academy Awards.

Beyond acting, Duru also contributed to the industry as the interim president of the Actors Guild of Nigeria in 2010 and was recognized with the United Nations Ambassador of Peace award in 2007.
Months prior to his death, in June, Duru had publicly dismissed circulating reports and a video suggesting he was battling a life-threatening illness, describing them as "fabricated and malicious." This unfortunate demise also comes approximately two years after the loss of his 15-year-old son, Ifeanyi, a tragedy the actor had publicly mourned on social media.
Francis Duru's journey from "Ahanna" to his final appearances showcased his constant evolution alongside Nollywood itself. His vast body of work, stretching from VHS home videos to modern streaming platforms, ensures his place in the annals of Nigerian cinema as an actor who grew with the industry and continued to inspire across generations.
