‘Nobody comes as a complete captain': Sourav Ganguly backs Shubman Gill, says he’ll get better

Mumbai: Shubman Gill was at the forefront as India’s players fired verbal volleys at England’s opening duo of Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, who were attempting to run down the clock towards the end of Day Three in the third Test at Lord’s and aiming to face just one over before stumps. Until that point, both teams had largely kept emotions in check throughout the series. But on that Saturday evening in London, things changed dramatically. In-your-face comments and finger-pointing added a fiery edge to a contest that had, till then, been defined more by high-quality cricket than overt aggression. The hostilities spilled over into the next two days, with both sides engaging in sledging, send-offs, and verbal spats.

Gill, leading India for the first time in a Test series, showed no intention of backing down, and he didn’t instruct his teammates to either. When former India captain Sourav Ganguly was asked about how the 25-year-old handled himself, he said, “He will handle it in his own way, he will learn. As a captain, he will learn.

Nobody comes as a complete captain. He did well in Birmingham, and he’ll get better. So you must give him time.

He’s a young captain.” Ganguly also lauded Gill’s batting performance, calling it his finest display in overseas conditions. “He has done phenomenally as a batsman. This is the best I’ve seen him bat away from home. First the century at Headingley and then back-to-back hundreds in Birmingham.” Gill is currently the top scorer in the series, amassing 607 runs at an average of 101.16, including three centuries, with a highest score of 269.

India’s narrow 22-run defeat at Lord’s left Ganguly “disappointed”. “The way India have batted in this series so far, they could have chased down 190. The batting quality in this team is absolutely brilliant. They’ll be more disappointed than I am because there was a real opportunity to go 2-1 up in the series. We just needed two partnerships to win. The ones that (Ravindra) Jadeja, (Jasprit) Bumrah, and (Mohammed) Siraj put together showed that with a little more fight at the top, India could have won this game,” Ganguly said on the sidelines of a promotional event here.

Poll

Do you think Shubman Gill is a promising captain for India?

On Bumrah’s availability, Ganguly said, “Hopefully he’ll recover in time. It depends on his body and how he feels. His physical condition will be key before a decision is made.”
