As reported by the Hindustan Times, there is a private tour of the exhibition before an exclusive dinner as well as a live performance. The Editor-in-Chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour and the event’s chair decides everything from the seating arrangements to the attendees’ behaviour expectations and even the food choices of over 400 high-profile guests. Here’s a list of some of the strict rules of the event.

According to the media publication, despite high-celebrities and social media stars walking the Met Gala’s red carpet, there is a reason why we aren’t privy to the photos, videos, Instagram stories or even TikTok videos from inside the Met. That is because of the strict ‘no phones’ policy inside the event. Reportedly, the private tours, dinner and the performances are not filmed in full and distributed to the public. While the rule is strictly enforced, the rule can often get broken, with celebs sharing sneak peeks from the event, especially the selfies primarily clicked in the bathroom.

Wintour, reportedly, ensures that the Met Gala, being one of the most important fashion nights of the year, includes the guests looking and smelling their best. Certain food items are banned from the dinner menu to prevent bad breath and poor photos. No onion, garlic, or parsley is added in the food to prevent lingering onion breath or having herbs stuck in the celebrities’ teeth when they smile for the photos. Messy dishes like bruschetta aren’t offered to the guests, to prevent food spillages on their extravagant dresses.

Even the most powerful and stylish personalities aren’t allowed to smoke, once inside the Met. The reason behind the rule being pretty simple. To prevent the curated collection of clothes from being damaged or have a smell of the smoke. When asked about this to curator Andrew Bolton, by TV personality Gayle King, he had expressed that the one thing a celebrity could do to ensure that they are “never” invited back would be smoking in the galleries. However, the media publication reports that celebrities have found a workaround for the same and often chose to smoke in the toilets.

For those who don’t know, celebrities and A-listers actually have to pay for their seats at the Met Gala. Despite the event being an invite-only affair, they have to pay a certain amount for each seat and table. Since the event is a fundraising event for the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the earrings go towards preserving its fashion collection, which is reportedly seven centuries old. Quoting a Time report from 2024, the individual ticket cost $75,000 and an entire table cost $350,000. Reportedly, the fashion house labels worn by celebrities during the event, cover the cost of the seats in return for their work to be showcased at the red carpet.

Did you know that in spite of paying $75,000 for a seat, one cannot choose where they want to sit during the event. Quoting the director of special projects at Vogue, Ward Durrett, the media publication states that a lot of planning goes into deciding who will be sitting next to whom. Even spouses are seated separately as they encourage people to mingle. The guests’ equations and prior relationships with other attendees are also considered while deciding the seating arrangement. The task is reportedly so important that they begin putting together the seating chart as early as December.

Despite getting an invite to the fashion event as shelling the large ticket cost, Vogue editor Anna Wintour herself has to approve the outfits worn by the guests at the exclusive event. The practice even has its own acronym, AWOK meaning “Anna Wintour Okay”.

Met Gala 2025 will be hosted on May 5, 2025, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
