No Classrooms, No Desks: Pupils In Abuja Outskirts Take Lessons Under Trees | Sahara Reporters

Civic tech platform Monitng revealed this following a field visit to the school, which is situated just outside Abuja.

Pupils of LEA Nomadic Primary School in Rugan Wakili Buba, Paiko Kore, Gwagwalada Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), are forced to learn under trees due to the absence of classrooms, furniture, and essential learning materials.

Civic tech platform Monitng revealed this following a field visit to the school, which is situated just outside Abuja.

It urged the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Mrs. Ireti Kingibe, who represents the Territory in the Nigerian Senate, to take action.

“We call on the FCT Minister @GovWike and the Senator representing the FCT @IretiKingibe to visit this community and take decisive action,” it said.

It confirmed the findings were based on first-hand observation, stating, “Our team visited LEA Nomadic Primary School, Rugan Wakili Buba, Paiko Kore, Gwagwalada, FCT Abuja”

The platform described the grim condition of the pupils, many of whom sit on the bare ground in the open.

“Dozens of children take classes under the shade of a tree, sitting on bare ground with no classrooms, chairs, or learning facilities. This is the harsh reality for children in the heart of the nation’s capital,” it said.

According to Monitng, despite significant education funding by the FCT Administration, LEA Nomadic Primary School lacks any classroom structures, leaving pupils to learn outdoors in all weather conditions.

During the rainy season, classes are often suspended entirely.

In some cases, community members offer their homes to support the children’s education. Most of the teachers are local volunteers, as government-assigned teachers have stopped attending due to poor infrastructure and working conditions.

“Education must be a priority not just on paper or in budget speeches, but in action that reaches the most underserved communities,” it said.

“These children are eager to learn. They deserve the dignity of a classroom, desks, and qualified teachers. The government must do better. The future of these children and our country depends on it.”
