No. 1 Seed Already on 'Upset Alert' for Second-Round Matchup
Thursday was filled with drama in the NCAA Tournament, but also some major blowouts. Two of the most notable came from No. 1 seed Houston, who dominated No. 16 seed SIU Edwardsville, and No. 8 seed Gonzaga, who blew out No. 9 seed Georgia.
While Houston’s win was expected, Gonzaga’s performance caught many off guard. Now, as the two teams are set to meet on Saturday in the second round of the Midwest Region, it seems Houston could already be on upset alert after Gonzaga's impressive 89-68 victory.
Following Gonzaga’s win, CBS Sports’ Wally Szczerbiak pointed out that Houston could be in serious trouble if they face that same version of Gonzaga this weekend, given how dominant the Bulldogs were on both ends of the floor.
"They have a gear that they can get to that's scary," Szczerbiak said. "That is the hardest second-round matchup. That’s a really tough game for Houston—they could be in trouble."

However, while Gonzaga played great, they remain a No. 8 seed for a reason. For all the "second gear" they reached on Thursday, there’s also a version of their team—one that’s been on display several times this season—where they look lost, stagnant, and tend to play down to their opponents. They’ve lost two games to Saint Mary’s this year and suffered back-to-back losses to Oregon State and Santa Clara in January.
Houston, on the other hand, won the Big 12 in their first season and finished the year 30-4. Against SIUE, they cruised to a 78-40 victory, showcasing their stifling defense, which also fuels their offense. Head coach Kelvin Sampson has built one of the most consistent and impressive cultures in college basketball with the Cougars program.
They've captured a No. 1 seed for three consecutive seasons, and they certainly won’t go down easily if Gonzaga hopes to pull off what would be a shocking upset on Saturday when the two historic programs meet.
