Published 9 hours ago3 minute read

The Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) has once again rekindled enthusiasm for science among secondary school students in Rivers State through its annual science quiz competition. This year’s edition, themed “Renewable Energy Solutions,” brought together top science students from across the state, igniting a fierce and inspiring intellectual contest.

Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, emerged victorious in the Senior Secondary 2 category, outshining seven other finalists with remarkable composure, precision, and scientific knowledge. Their triumph came at the conclusion of a three-phase event comprising a championship round, a science project exhibition, and the grand finale.

In the science project exhibition segment, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School secured the top spot. Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, took second and third positions respectively, with projects that showcased creative solutions to energy and environmental issues.

For the Senior Secondary 1 category, the competition concluded at the championship stage. Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, claimed first place, followed by Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor, in second place, and Government Secondary School, Abua, in third. Other schools that made it to the final round included Government Secondary School, Eneka; Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt; and the aforementioned finalists.

Speaking at the grand finale, Sophia Horsfall, General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, reiterated the company’s dedication to promoting scientific excellence and sustainability. She noted that as the world moves toward cleaner energy sources, NLNG is proud to support platforms that prepare young Nigerians to be leaders in the global energy transition. She emphasized that the company’s consistent investment in education reflects a broader goal of nurturing future scientists, engineers, and innovators.

The Permanent Secretary of the Rivers State Ministry of Education, Dr. Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, represented by Tam Job Inisefiekabo, commended the initiative, describing the theme as timely and relevant given the global challenges of climate change and energy insecurity. Dr. Peters Nwagor, Chairman of the Science Teachers Association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State Chapter, highlighted the importance of equipping students with the tools to innovate and contribute to sustainable development.

Launched in 2008 and reintroduced in 2020 after a six-year hiatus, the NLNG Science Quiz Competition has evolved into a premier academic contest. The recent addition of a Science Projects Fair has further expanded the scope of the programme by allowing students to present hands-on solutions to scientific challenges.

Organised in collaboration with the Rivers State Ministry of Education, STAN, and Dragnet Solutions Limited, the competition continues to serve as a vital platform for developing Nigeria’s next generation of STEM leaders.
