GBA President Abraham Neequaye Resigns Amid Controversy

Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA) President Abraham Kotei Neequaye has announced his resignation, bringing an end to a challenging tenure marked by significant disputes and public scrutiny. His decision was publicly revealed on Wednesday, June 25, 2025, through a WhatsApp message disseminated by the GBA’s communications director, Mohammed Amin Lamptey. While Neequaye cited "personal reasons" for his departure, the move comes amidst mounting pressure from clashes with the Sports Ministry, allegations of mismanagement, and criticism surrounding the authority’s operations, particularly a questionable deal for the Ghana Boxing League.

The catalyst for much of the recent pressure on Neequaye was the tragic death of Nigerian light-heavyweight boxer Gabriel Oluwaseun Olanrewaju, who collapsed in the ring on March 29, 2025, during a bout against Ghana’s Jonathan Mbanugu. Olanrewaju was pronounced dead at Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, an incident that immediately triggered widespread concern and intense scrutiny across both Ghana and Nigeria. GBA Communications Director Mohammed Amin Lamptey revealed the profound emotional and personal toll this tragedy took on Neequaye, who personally oversaw the autopsy and repatriation process for the boxer. Adding to this immense burden, Neequaye’s elder sister passed away just two days after the boxer's burial, compounding his personal grief.

Following the boxer's death, the relationship between Neequaye and the Ghana Ministry of Sports and Recreation, led by Minister Kofi Iddie Adams, reportedly deteriorated sharply. Despite Neequaye’s acknowledged contributions, such as revitalizing the national boxing league and producing successful boxers, Minister Adams reportedly conveyed an inability to work with him and his administration. This perceived loss of confidence from the Ministry, coupled with the launch of a seven-member Committee of Enquiry to investigate the incident, created an untenable environment for the GBA president.

Reflecting on his time in office, Neequaye described his resignation as a "tough but necessary" decision, stating it was "the best course of action for me and some executive board members with integrity and dignity at this crucial time." He expressed gratitude for the opportunities and insights gained, expecting them to aid his future endeavors. Neequaye also highlighted the voluntary nature of his role, noting that GBA officials operate without salary or allowance, performing "sacrificial work to serve others and one's country." He extended thanks to the media and compatriots who supported him, particularly those who faced "character assassination" during difficult periods.

Neequaye’s resignation is officially set to take effect on Friday, June 27, 2025. He is scheduled to hold a press conference at 10 AM on that day at the GBA headquarters, where he is expected to formally confirm his exit, provide further details surrounding his decision, and address the various allegations that have been made against him and his administration.
