FG Delivers Houses to 1994 Super Eagles Heroes After 31 Years

After a wait of more than three decades, the Federal Government of Nigeria has finally honored its pledge to provide house allocations to the members of the iconic 1994 Super Eagles squad. This esteemed team famously clinched the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, defeating Zambia in the final, a victory that led the then-General Sani Abacha administration to promise each squad member a house upon their return to the country.

The long-awaited fulfillment of this promise was formally announced by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development. Among the notable beneficiaries is former striker Efan Ekoku, who received an official allocation letter for a house located in Abuja. Ekoku, unable to attend personally, was represented at the modest ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun. The presentation was made by Pemi Temitope, who serves as the Director and Head of Public Building and Housing Development, acting on behalf of the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

Pemi Temitope lauded the government's gesture, emphasizing it as a clear demonstration of their dedication to recognizing the team's patriotic service, which brought immense glory to Nigeria over thirty years ago. Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun conveyed her profound gratitude, expressing thanks to both the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for upholding such a long-standing commitment. She highlighted that this act not only celebrated Efan Ekoku’s contribution but also significantly restored trust in the power of promises kept.

It is worth recalling that in 2022, the then-President, Muhammadu Buhari, had given his approval for the implementation of this 1994 pledge, twenty-eight years after its initial declaration. The housing units are now being systematically distributed to the team members across various states, with some players, like Efan Ekoku, receiving their allocations in the capital city, Abuja. The news has been met with positive reactions from the public on social media, with many applauding the government for this commendable act of fulfilling a historic promise, reinforcing faith in public commitments.
