Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, has emerged winner of the 2025 edition of the NLNG science quiz competition held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

The school triumphed in the Senior Secondary 2 (SS2) category, defeating seven other finalists after a fierce display of speed, intelligence and scientific knowledge at the grand finale on Saturday.

This year’s contest was themed “Renewable Energy Solutions.”

The competition, organised by the Nigeria Liquefied Natural Gas (NLNG) Limited, reached its climax with eight public secondary schools competing after going through earlier stages that included a science project exhibition and championship rounds.

Community Secondary School, Igboh Etche, was praised for its composure and deep understanding of clean energy concepts which gave them an edge over their peers.

In the project exhibition category, Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School, Oginigba, clinched first place, followed by Bonny National Grammar School (Senior) and Community Secondary School, Kira Tai, in second and third positions respectively.

Meanwhile, in the SS1 category, Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana, took first place, while Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor and Government Secondary School, Abua, came second and third respectively.

Other finalists included Government Secondary School, Eneka (4th), Niger Delta Science School, Obio/Akpor (5th), Nigerian Navy Secondary School, Port Harcourt (6th), Birabi Memorial Grammar School, Bori, Khana (7th) and Government Secondary School, Abua (8th).

Speaking at the finale, Sophia Horsfall, NLNG’s general manager, external relations and sustainable development, reiterated the company’s dedication to science and sustainability.

“The world is moving fast towards cleaner, greener energy. NLNG is proud to be leading this shift by exporting LNG, a cleaner fossil fuel, and supplying LPG to Nigerian homes. Through this quiz, we are not only investing in education, but inspiring the scientists, engineers, and innovators of tomorrow,” she said.

“Science is the heartbeat of progress. That’s why we support platforms like this, where young minds can discover their potential. Since inception, over 200 public schools have benefitted from this competition, proving that when given the opportunity, our students will shine,” she added.

Also speaking, Azibaolanari Uzoma-Nwogu, permanent secretary at the Rivers State ministry of education, represented by Tam Inisefiekabo, described the theme as both timely and relevant in addressing global challenges such as climate change, environmental degradation and energy insecurity.

Peters Nwagor, chairman of the science teachers association of Nigeria (STAN), Rivers State chapter, said it was important to equip young Nigerians with the knowledge and creativity needed to drive sustainable progress and innovation.

The NLNG science quiz competition, launched in 2008 and relaunched in 2020 after a six-year pause, has grown to include a Science Projects Fair, which was introduced last year to allow students showcase practical solutions to real-world scientific problems.

The event was organised in collaboration with the Rivers State ministry of education, STAN and Dragnet Solutions Limited.
