FG Fulfills 31-Year Housing Pledge to 1994 Super Eagles

The Nigerian Federal Government has commenced the fulfillment of a 31-year-old promise to reward the victorious 1994 Super Eagles team with housing units. This pledge, originally made in 1994 after the team won the African Cup of Nations in Tunisia, marking Nigeria’s second triumph in the biennial championship, is now steadily being honored across the nation.

Former Super Eagles striker Efan Ekoku recently received his allocation letter for a housing unit in Abuja, an event that brought immense joy and gratitude. His niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, represented him at the handover ceremony and expressed profound appreciation to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing. She emphasized that the gesture not only honors her uncle's patriotic service but also significantly restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.

Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of Department, Public Building and Housing Development at the Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, presented the allocation letter on behalf of the minister. Temitope affirmed the government's unwavering commitment to ensuring the fulfillment of this long-standing pledge, acknowledging the team's patriotic service that brought immense honor to the nation.

It was recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari had approved the allocation of these houses to the team members in 2022, 28 years after the initial promise. The distribution process is ongoing, with housing units being allocated in various states across Nigeria. While some members have received their properties in their respective states, others, like Ekoku, collected theirs in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Another prominent member of the 1994 squad, former winger Emmanuel Amuneke, confirmed that he had received his housing allocation a long time ago. He urged the government to expedite the distribution process for the remaining members, emphasizing the importance of fulfilling the promise to all who contributed to that historic victory. The 1994 Super Eagles achieved legendary status by defeating Zambia 2-1 in the final, a team that featured prominent players such as Amuneke, Ekoku, and other stars of what is often referred to as Nigerian football’s golden generation.
