31 years after, FG rewards victorious '94 Super Eagles with houses

Published 17 hours ago2 minute read

Former Super Eagles striker, Efan Ekoku, could not hide his joy, yesterday when the federal government redeemed the promise it made 31 years ago to reward each member of the 1994 set of the team with a housing unit.

The federal government made the promise in 1994 in appreciation of the team’s winning of the African Cup of Nations. That victory was Nigeria’s second success in the biennial championship.

The Director/Head of Department, Public Building and Housing Development, Federal Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, Pemi Temitope, handed over the allocation letter on behalf of the minister to Ekoku in Abuja.

Temitope explained that the government was committed to ensuring the fulfillment of the pledge and rewarding members of the team for their patriotic service that brought honour to the nation, saying, the exercise has been done in states across Nigeria, while some collected theirs in Abuja.

According to him, the long-standing pledge of houses to the victorious 1994 Super Eagles Team that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia (Tunisia ‘94), is steadily being fulfilled.

An excited Ekoku, represented by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, said: “I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle.”

She expressed delight to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through, adding, “The gesture not only honours Mr. Efan Ekoku’s service, but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept.”

It would be recalled that former President Muhammadu Buhari, in 2022, approved the allocation of the houses to the members of the team to fulfill the pledge made by the federal government in 1994.
