“Nnamdi Kanu was right after all,” tweeted @OlisaRoberto, referencing the detained Biafran separatist leader and longtime critic of Buhari’s leadership. His comment echoed sentiments shared by several users who felt Buhari's rule had been marred by marginalisation and authoritarianism.
In a more sombre tone, @Adejubesm reminded followers of the transient nature of power: “Let this be a sobering reminder: no matter the office you occupy or the power you wield today, the moment life leaves you, all that remains is your legacy.”
But not all reactions were so reflective. Some, like @option_united, expressed open disdain, posting: “What took him so long?” The sentiment was amplified by others who accused the former president of presiding over years of hardship, insecurity, and human rights abuses. @ix_wilson simply said, “Gone too late.”
Criticism also extended to the notion of mourning. @GucciStarboi warned: “Mind wetin you go comment for here o, cuz even ordinary 'Rest in peace' fit make some Nigerians swear for you.” This statement reflects the polarised nature of Buhari's impact on the nation.
Still, there were voices who chose the path of compassion. “May Allah have mercy on him and grant him Aljana Firdaus,” tweeted @Bigdayo02, calling the moment “a sad day for the entire Nigeria.”
Others pointed fingers at those who supported Buhari's rise to power in 2015. @therealdaddymo1 wrote, “Peter Obi warned Nigerians before the 2015 elections… Nigerians didn’t listen.”
The social media outpouring highlights the deeply divided opinions surrounding Buhari’s legacy—one shaped by strong anti-corruption rhetoric and infrastructure development, but also marred by accusations of economic mismanagement, press repression, and worsening insecurity.
As Nigeria absorbs the news of his passing, the conversation about Buhari’s place in Nigeria’s history continues; raw, unfiltered, and reflective of a country still coming to terms with his leadership.
