Nigerian Tech Maestro's Double Play: Innovator Scales Two Digital Banks!
Segun Adeyemo's profound relationship with technology began in early childhood, sparked by his primary school's computer lab, pay-by-the-hour cybercafes, and an insatiable curiosity about digital tools. This early fascination laid the groundwork for a career that would see him become a pivotal figure in Africa's digital banking revolution and, ultimately, the founder of Sava Global, a venture studio dedicated to scaling African innovation.
Adeyemo's earliest technological memories trace back to the captivating world of his primary school computer lab. At just five years old, the sight of chunky desktop computers and the ability to draw in Coral Draw felt surreal. This fascination extended to his home, where he tinkered with his father's gadgets, and later to video games, phones, and cameras. As a teenager, he engaged with Walkmans, MP3 players, and spent hours in cybercafes, seeking connections in early chat rooms. These formative experiences cultivated his interest in how things worked and the burgeoning digital opportunities in Nigeria.
His professional journey, which began officially in 2012, has been diverse and impactful. Adeyemo started in digital communications for an international travel company, then transitioned to digital strategy for luxury fashion brands and modeling agencies across major global hubs. He also delved into real estate and agency management before a crucial contract with First Bank, where he focused on manually onboarding thousands of customers to their digital platforms, a significant effort in the nascent era of digital banking.
A defining chapter of his career unfolded at Sterling Bank in early 2020, amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. Initially managing their digital banking product, GoMoney, Adeyemo successfully guided the platform to achieve product-market fit, leading to substantial growth in transaction volume and user sign-ups. This experience proved invaluable for his subsequent, and perhaps most impactful, role at Kuda Bank. There, Adeyemo and his team were instrumental in scaling Kuda from approximately 2 million to 5 million customers. He knew his work was complete when Kuda became ubiquitous, with everyday Nigerians – from filling station attendants to plumbers – using the digital bank, signifying its widespread adoption and transformation into a household name.
Motivated by the success at Kuda, Adeyemo established Sava Global with a mission to help African startups scale. Initially operating as a growth marketing agency, Sava Global partnered with brands like FoodCourt, Payday, Kadana, and LG, optimizing their growth and helping them understand the African consumer. However, encountering an ecosystem where many founders, despite strong ideas, lacked the conviction and resources for aggressive scaling, Sava Global pivoted. It transitioned into a venture studio, developing its own products. One such product is Travla, a solution designed to simplify travel for young Africans, promoting cultural exposure and opportunity across the continent and beyond. Interestingly, Adeyemo's educational background is in Banking and Finance, not marketing. He credits his success to a natural aptitude for creative arts, psychology, branding, and a keen observational understanding of human behavior.
For Adeyemo, technology is the backbone of 90% of Sava Global's operations, driving research, writing, creation, analysis, product development, and internal automation. Personally, technology has streamlined tasks like research, drastically cutting down time. However, he also observes the rise of a
