Nigerian Music World Mourns: Phyna's Sister's Untimely Death Shakes Industry
Ruth Otabor, sister of Big Brother Naija Season 7 winner Josephine "Phyna" Otabor, tragically passed away on August 31, at approximately 6:30 a.m. Her death followed severe injuries sustained in a road incident involving one of the Dangote Group's trucks. The accident occurred on August 13 in Auchi, Edo State, just six days after Ms. Otabor had graduated from Auchi Polytechnic. The news of her passing has evoked a significant outpouring of condolences from various celebrities and fans, while also bringing to light an ongoing dispute between her family and the Dangote Group concerning accountability and the provision of medical care.
The devastating incident on August 13 left Ruth Otabor with critical injuries, ultimately necessitating the amputation of one of her legs. PREMIUM TIMES reported that eyewitnesses described the heavy-duty truck crushing her leg before a bystander managed to stop it. In the aftermath of the accident, Phyna, the prominent reality TV star and singer, consistently accused Dangote Cement Plc of negligence and alleged foul play in the management of her sister's medical treatment. She had publicly appealed to representatives of the Dangote Group to facilitate her sister's transfer abroad for advanced medical attention, stating that Ruth had been moved to Lagos with the expectation of receiving overseas care. Phyna made an emphatic statement, suggesting that if Ruth were the daughter of Dangote Group CEO, Aliko Dangote, she would not have been left in the hospital where she eventually died.
In response to Ruth's passing and the various accusations, the Dangote Group issued a statement expressing profound sadness. The company affirmed that since the accident, its officials and insurance partners had been in constant communication with Ruth and her family, covering all financial and medical costs. Furthermore, the statement indicated that arrangements had been made for Ruth to be flown to India for advanced treatment, pending medical clearance from her attending doctors. The Dangote Group reiterated its unwavering commitment to safety, accountability, and compassion, affirming that these principles remain at the core of its operations and that it is dedicated to strengthening its safety systems and supporting those affected by moments of tragedy.
Despite the efforts mentioned by the Dangote Group and Ruth's courageous struggle to live, she ultimately succumbed to her injuries. Her death was officially confirmed by Eko Solicitors & Advocates on behalf of the Otabor family, who subsequently requested privacy during their period of grief. The tragic news prompted numerous public figures to share their condolences. Nollywood actress Kate Henshaw wrote, "Ehhh God, May God comfort your family at this difficult time." Former BBNaija housemate Wanni expressed deep sorrow, saying, "Oh no! I'm so pained, No! No! Ruth went through too much pain, may her soul rest in peace." Media personality Hero Daniels and reality TV star Daniella Peters also offered their sympathies, with Daniels stating, "My sincere condolences, May God grant you and your family fortitude to bear this great loss. RIP Ruth," and Peters adding, "Kai, so sorry Phyna, My Condolences." Phyna's social media platforms have since been flooded with messages of support and prayers from fans and well-wishers.
