Nigerian Journalism Mourns Veteran Editor Dotun Oladipo
Veteran journalist and publisher Dotun Oladipo, founder of The Eagle Online, has died in Lagos at the age of 56, prompting tributes from media organisations and President Bola Tinubu. The International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria described Oladipo as a committed journalist, publisher and advocate for press freedom, noting that he served as chairman of its Programmes Committee from 2024 and remained actively involved in its activities despite running his publication.
His nearly three-decade career spanned major Nigerian newsrooms including Newswatch, PUNCH, The Compass, Nigerian Tribune and The Sun. The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) also mourned Oladipo, recalling his tenure as president from 2017 to 2021, when Nigeria’s online publishing industry was expanding rapidly.
GOCOP said his experience in traditional journalism helped shape the organisation during its formative years, while his understanding of both the editorial and commercial sides of publishing strengthened the position of digital media in Nigeria.
His commitment to the sector was reflected in his continued involvement with professional journalism organisations and industry development.
A Career Spanning Traditional and Digital Journalism
President Bola Tinubu extended condolences to Oladipo’s family and colleagues, describing his death as a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry and highlighting his contributions to political reporting, digital publishing and democratic discourse.
Through The Eagle Online, which he established after his years in mainstream journalism, Oladipo became part of a generation of publishers who helped shape Nigeria’s transition from traditional newsrooms to an increasingly digital media environment.
His career reflected the transformation of Nigerian journalism itself, from established print institutions to the rapidly expanding world of online publishing.
