Nigerian Govt Hails Simon Ekpa's Finland Conviction As IPOB Disowns Him

The Finnish legal system recently delivered a significant verdict concerning the controversial Biafra agitator, Mazi Simon Ekpa, sentencing him to six years in prison for terrorism-related activities and aggravated tax fraud. This development has elicited varied reactions from key stakeholders, most notably the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Nigerian government, underscoring the complex dynamics surrounding the Biafran self-determination movement and international judicial cooperation.

In a formal declaration, the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) categorically disassociated itself from Simon Ekpa, asserting that he has never been an official member or held any position within the movement or its security arm, the Eastern Security Network (ESN). IPOB, through its Media and Publicity Secretary, stated that records from a Finnish court clearly show their testimony under oath confirming Ekpa's non-affiliation. Furthermore, Ekpa himself, under oath, reportedly described himself as a mere content creator and admitted to having disowned IPOB. The group warned against misrepresenting his conviction as being linked to IPOB, reiterating its commitment to nonviolent methods and lawful self-determination, emphasizing its registration under international law. IPOB also noted that Ekpa had established parallel groups and initiatives not recognized by their mainstream organization and urged the international community to ensure that the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in Nigeria remains uninfluenced by Ekpa's unrelated case.

Conversely, the Nigerian government has lauded the Finnish court's decision as a major victory in its fight against insecurity and terrorism. Lateef Fagbemi, the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, expressed his satisfaction, stating that Ekpa's conviction for terrorism and related offences confirmed his influence in committing heinous crimes, particularly in Nigeria's South East. Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, echoed this sentiment on social media, hailing the sentencing as a "major victory for the Nigerian people in the collective fight against terror." Mr. Fagbemi also commended Finnish authorities for their support in combating insecurity, viewing it as a promising sign for future collaborations and indicating that further actions would be considered upon detailed review of the judgment.

Simon Ekpa, a 40-year-old Nigerian-Finnish citizen, was arrested on November 21, 2024, alongside four others on suspicion of terrorist activities. Finnish police accused him of contributing to violence and crimes against civilians in South-eastern Nigeria. The Päijät-Häme District Court initially ordered his imprisonment "with probable cause on suspicion of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent." Investigations revealed Ekpa was suspected of financing terrorism by collecting money in violation of the Finnish Money Collection Act between August 23, 2021, and November 18, 2024. While the other four suspects were later released, Ekpa faced charges of public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent and participation in a terrorist group, all linked to his secessionist activities in "Biafra land," which he denied in his initial court appearance on May 30. Ekpa leads "Autopilot," a faction of the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), a group advocating for an independent state of Biafra, though IPOB has consistently denied involvement in deadly attacks linked to the separatist movement.

Amidst these developments, the Finland Ambassador to Nigeria, Sanna Selin, provided insights into bilateral relations between Finland and Nigeria, during an interview conducted several days before the public announcement of Ekpa's conviction. Ambassador Selin highlighted the thoroughness of the Finnish legal process, emphasizing that cases like Ekpa's require extensive investigation and evidence gathering, a testament to Finland's strong adherence to the rule of law and human rights. She assured that despite the time taken, the case was meticulously investigated, reflecting Finland's commitment to due process.

Ambassador Selin also delved into the broader aspects of Finland-Nigeria cooperation, noting that while diplomatic relations have been cordial since the 1960s, trade volumes remain modest. Finland is actively seeking to diversify its economy away from fossil fuels, which influences its trade relations. Efforts to boost economic ties include high-level diplomatic visits and the "Nordic-Nigeria Connect" business platform, set to hold its fourth edition in Lagos in October, aiming to connect hundreds of Finnish and Nigerian companies, particularly in green economy, digital services, and health sectors. The Ambassador acknowledged Nigeria's investment-friendly policies as a positive driver for Finnish private sector interest, with key priority sectors being ICT, energy and power, circular economy, and health. Finland, an innovation-driven, high-tech society, sees Nigeria as a promising partner, especially in renewable energy and the creative economy, including gaming, animation, and digital media, indicating potential for long-term investments following increased awareness and interaction.

In the realm of education, Finland, globally admired for its system, is supporting Nigeria with systemic reforms through comprehensive teacher training programs and partnerships with Finnish universities for applied sciences. The "education outside the classroom" model, emphasizing early learning and skill acquisition, is also being shared. Ambassador Selin expressed hope that Nigerian students studying in Finland would return to apply their acquired skills for national development. She highlighted the ease of access for skilled Nigerian youth to Finnish education, with an increasing number of English-speaking programs available.

Addressing other areas of cooperation, Ambassador Selin stressed the importance of knowledge and technology transfer, particularly in training trainers and contributing to job creation. Finland's Africa strategy, published in 2021, aims for diversified, mutually beneficial partnerships, shifting focus from "aid to trade," with Nigeria recognized as a vital regional power and the "giant of Africa." Regarding gender equality, a core Finnish value, Selin suggested Nigeria could learn from Finland's long-term commitment to inclusive education, healthcare, and political participation for women, advocating for stronger legal frameworks and increased female representation. She also noted Finland's willingness to share expertise on its strong taxation system, which forms the bedrock of its developed social services, if Nigeria expresses interest in similar reforms to broaden its tax base and fund development initiatives.

Furthermore, climate-focused partnerships are being explored, including support for off-grid renewable energy solutions, joint research on circular economy, waste management, and climate resilience. Finnish technology in these areas, coupled with a focus on increasing trade, could significantly aid Nigeria's energy transition and sustainable development goals. The Ambassador also mentioned the presence of significant Finnish companies like Nokia, now focused on telecommunications networks (5G, 6G, 7G, border security), and Wärtsilä, contributing to energy transition and green solutions, both employing a substantial workforce in Nigeria and hoping to pave the way for more Finnish companies.

Concluding her interview, Ambassador Selin shared personal observations from her year in Nigeria, expressing her enjoyment of Nigerian culture, including Adires clothing and Afrobeat music, despite still adjusting to the spicy food. She praised the friendliness and cooperativeness of the Nigerian people, underscoring her commitment to strengthening the bilateral agenda and exploring new partnerships between the two nations, aiming to increase mutual awareness and understanding to unlock untapped diplomatic and economic opportunities.
