Nigerian Dreams Shattered: Super Falcons Crash Out of World Cup, NFF Launches Probe

Nigeria's national women's football team, the Super Falcons, have regrettably failed to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup, marking a historic absence from the tournament since its inception in 1991. This significant setback occurred after a continental playoff defeat, losing 2-1 to South Africa's Banyana Banyana in Casablanca, Morocco, at the Stade Moulay Rachid.

The Super Falcons were pushed into the playoff route following a 1-0 quarter-final loss to Cameroon during the 2026 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON). Only the four semi-finalists from WAFCON secured automatic qualification slots for the 2027 World Cup, leaving the quarter-final losers, including Nigeria, to contend for three additional tickets via the inter-confederation playoff route. Despite this second chance, Nigeria was unable to capitalize, ultimately succumbing to South Africa.

During the crucial match, the Falcons managed to hold South Africa scoreless in the first half. However, Banyana Banyana broke the deadlock early in the second period, with Thembi Kgatlana opening the scoring, followed by Refiloe Jane doubling their advantage. While Christy Ucheibe managed to pull one goal back for Nigeria late in the game, it was not enough to find an equalizer and force extra time. The result propels South Africa into the first phase of the inter-confederation playoffs for the 2027 Women's World Cup, which is slated to be held in Brazil in June of next year.
