2027: SDP Presidential Hopeful Adebayo Unveils Economic and Power Reform Agenda
SDP presidential candidate Prince Adewole Adebayo has unveiled his 2027 agenda, promising to revive Nigeria's economy, tackle insecurity, and significantly boost electricity generation. These pledges were made during consultations with the Middle Belt Forum, which reiterated its stance on power rotation and justice, signaling its aspiration for the presidency in 2031.
Prince Adewole Adebayo, presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), has outlined an ambitious reform agenda for Nigeria ahead of the 2027 presidential election, including plans to expand electricity generation and boost economic productivity.
Speaking during an engagement with leaders of the Middle Belt Forum (MBF) in Abuja, Adebayo said his administration would decentralise economic production by empowering states and local governments to drive agriculture, infrastructure and employment.
He also pledged greater transparency in public finance by separating government officials from public contracting and strengthening mechanisms to prevent corruption.
Adebayo said his government would pursue community-based security structures to address insecurity from the grassroots while ending any form of government support for criminal activity.
On electricity, he proposed increasing national generation capacity to between 50,000 and 75,000 megawatts through a combination of solar, gas and hydroelectric power, alongside the rehabilitation of existing hydro stations and reforms to the electricity market.
He also promised to overhaul the mining sector, strengthen Nigeria’s international partnerships in areas such as security, education and technology, and improve consular protection and migration management for Nigerians abroad.
The Middle Belt Forum said it would consult its political, cultural, youth, women and elders’ structures before deciding whether to support Adebayo’s 2027 ambition. MBF Deputy President Idi Waziri reiterated the forum’s position on power rotation, saying it expects the South to complete its eight-year tenure before the Middle Belt seeks the presidency in 2031.
SDP National Chairman Prof. Sadiq Gombe meanwhile described Adebayo as a credible alternative and said the party would continue consultations with Nigerians and stakeholder groups as it seeks to position itself ahead of the 2027 elections.
