Nigeria's Next Big Thing: Israel Adekunle Dominates Law School Class of 2026
Israel Adeniyi Adekunle has emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student at the 2026 Nigerian Law School Call to Bar, winning a record 12 academic prizes. His exceptional academic track record and inspiring reflections on success have garnered significant recognition, including a substantial cash award from the ABS Foundation. Adekunle's story highlights the immense dedication required to excel in the demanding legal profession.
The Call to Bar ceremony in Nigeria is an event of immense significance, where thousands of aspiring lawyers gather annually in Abuja, celebrating hard-earned success alongside their proud families. While every participant's achievement is monumental, some students distinguish themselves with coveted First Class honors, and then there is the overall best—the individual who surpasses all others. For the 2026 Nigerian Law School Call to Bar, this esteemed position was earned by Israel Adeniyi Adekunle, who has officially emerged as the Overall Best Graduating Student.
Israel Adeniyi Adekunle's accomplishment is particularly remarkable given the demanding environment of law school. He stood out among 6,009 successful candidates in the Bar Final Examinations, not only conquering the rigorous assessments but also being honored with a staggering 12 academic prizes. These awards were generously donated by some of the most distinguished minds in the history of the Nigerian legal profession. Israel described walking up to receive his awards as a deeply humbling and rewarding culmination of an incredibly demanding journey, receiving handshakes from the highest legal authorities, including the Chief Justice of Nigeria, the Attorney-General of the Federation, and the Chairman of the Body of Benchers.
Reflecting on his challenging yet fulfilling experience, Israel shared, "Law School was one of the most demanding yet rewarding experiences of my life. It imbued me with grit, attention to detail, discipline and the ability to think critically under pressure. I have always known that success is rarely glamorous while you are in the process; over time, however, consistent effort compounds into results that once seemed distant."
For those familiar with his academic history, Israel’s record-breaking feat at the Nigerian Law School was not unexpected. He possesses a stellar track record of academic brilliance, having previously graduated as the Best Graduating Student from the Faculty of Law at the University of Ilorin (Unilorin). His acceptance of the Most Promising Graduating Student of the Year prize marked his third time earning a 'Best Graduating Student' title.
His exceptional discipline and academic prowess garnered recognition beyond the academic halls. Following his Call to Bar, Dr. Abubakar Bukola Saraki, Founder of the Abubakar Bukola Saraki (ABS) Foundation, hosted Israel for an intimate celebratory dinner. To acknowledge his dedication to academic excellence, the ABS Foundation presented Israel with a well-deserved ₦2,000,000 cash award, intended to support his future endeavors.
Despite the widespread celebration, the twelve prizes, and the financial rewards, Israel remains incredibly grounded about his career path. He stated, "I found myself ruminating on what it truly means to be ‘promising.’ “Is promise measured by academic achievements or by the lawyer one becomes after years of practice? Only time will answer that question. For now, I am content to roll up my sleeves, learn from those who have gone before me, gather experience and work every day to ensure that the promise recognised today becomes a reality tomorrow.”
