Nigeria's Lassa Fever Emergency: Death Toll Climbs to 184

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has reported a significant number of Lassa Fever cases and fatalities across Nigeria this year. According to the latest situation report for Week 46, covering November 10th to 16th, 2025, the country has recorded a cumulative total of 995 confirmed cases of Lassa Fever and 184 casualties.

The NCDC's report highlighted an increase in confirmed cases from 10 in Epi week 45 to 19 in Epi week 46 of 2025. These new cases were specifically reported in Bauchi, Ondo, and Edo states. The cumulative data for Week 46 shows a Case Fatality Rate (CFR) of 18.5 percent, which is notably higher than the 16.2 percent recorded during the same period in 2024.

Lassa Fever has impacted 21 states across 102 Local Government Areas, with a substantial 88 percent of the confirmed cases originating from Ondo, Bauchi, and Edo states. The predominant age group affected by the disease is 21-30 years. Encouragingly, the NCDC noted a decrease in the number of suspected and confirmed cases compared to the same period in 2024, and no new healthcare workers were reported to be affected during Week 46.
