Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, says Nigeria’s democratic journey through regular elections, peaceful transitions, and adherence to constitutional norms has become a role model for other West African nations.

In a statement issued Thursday by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, to mark the June 12 Democracy Day celebration, Tuggar maintained that Nigeria’s democratic stability in West Africa amid political turmoil in the region serves as strong evidence that the country is on the right path.

Tuggar described Nigeria as a beacon of hope and stability in the region, saying: “Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient. “In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development.”

The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to regional diplomacy, amid ongoing efforts by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to address the wave of putsches in Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger.

He maintained that democratic governance must be reinstated to ECOWAS’ conflict resolution strategy, pointing out that democracy is not just an internal affair, but Nigeria’s strategic contribution to regional peace.

“Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.” Tuggar commended President Bola Tinubu for taking the country on a path of “economic recovery and political stability”. The minister expressed hopes that the president’s reforms will lead Nigeria to a future of shared prosperity.
