Nigeria Democracy: A West African Stability Beacon

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar
The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, on Thursday described the country’s democratic system as a source of stability in West Africa, positioning it as a model for the region amid rising political upheavals.
In a statement issued by his spokesperson, Alkasim Abdulkadir, to mark Democracy Day, Tuggar said Nigeria continues to uphold democratic principles through regular elections, peaceful transitions of power, and adherence to constitutional order, despite widespread democratic setbacks across the subregion.
He noted that the country’s commitment to electoral accountability, civic participation, and the rule of law has helped preserve internal stability and projected Nigeria as a reliable democratic partner.
“Nigeria stands as a beacon of hope and stability in the region.
“Our democratic institutions may not be perfect, but they remain resilient.
“In a time when democracy is under assault in parts of West Africa, Nigeria has continued to demonstrate that the rule of law, electoral accountability, and civic participation are essential pillars for long-term peace and development,” the minister stated.
Tuggar’s remarks came as the Economic Community of West African States faces renewed challenges in countries like Mali, Burkina Faso, Guinea, and Niger, where military takeovers have disrupted democratic governance.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s support for diplomatic efforts to restore civilian rule and insisted that democracy must remain central to regional conflict resolution strategies.
Citing Nigeria’s role in past peacekeeping missions and ECOWAS engagements, Tuggar stressed that the country’s political health significantly influences the broader West African landscape.
He stressed that democratic governance is not solely a domestic concern but a vital part of regional stability.
“Democracy is not just an internal affair,” he said. “It is our strategic contribution to regional peace. Our progress strengthens the African democratic project as a whole.”
The minister also used the occasion to commend President Bola Tinubu’s efforts in steering the country toward economic recovery and political consolidation.
He expressed optimism that ongoing reforms would lay the foundation for long-term prosperity.
