Nigeria Mourns: Sporting Legend, Ex-NFF President Ibrahim Galadima, Passes Away

Nigeria's sports community, particularly football, is mourning the passing of Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima, a revered figure described as an epitome of leadership, integrity, and principled service. Galadima, a former Chairman of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) and a distinguished community leader, died on a Saturday at the age of 74 after a protracted illness. His demise was announced by Kano Pillars, a football club he helped establish, signifying a profound loss to sports administration and to Nigeria as a whole.
Born on June 14, 1951, in Kano, Alhaji Galadima dedicated his life to public service and the development of sports. His career began in Kano State, where he served as Chairman of the Kano State Football Association from 1977 to 1979. He later became the Executive Chairman of the Kano State Sports Council from 1981 to 1983. His commitment extended beyond sports, as he also held significant government roles, including Commissioner for Social Welfare, Youth, and Sports, and later Commissioner for Works, Housing, and Transport in Kano State during the late 1980s.
Galadima's influence quickly grew to the national level. In 1984, he was appointed a Member of the Caretaker Committee of the National Sports Commission. From 1985 to 1987, he served as the 1st Vice President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee. His administrative prowess was further highlighted during Nigeria's preparations for international tournaments; he was a Member of the Presidential Monitoring Committee for Stadia Development for the planned 1995 FIFA World Youth Championship. When Nigeria eventually hosted the FIFA World Youth Championship in 1999, Galadima commendably chaired the Kano Local Organizing Committee (LOC). This particular LOC stood out for its unprecedented act of returning all unspent money to the coffers of the Federal Government, a testament to his incorruptible character and prudent financial management.
His tenure as President of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) from 2002 to 2006 was marked by his unwavering commitment to establishing the NFA's independence against persistent ministry interference. He was known for his strong character, principled stance, and being incorruptible, a quality that earned him deep respect from journalists, who noted his "no brown envelope culture." A notable incident during his leadership involved securing the services of Bryan Robson as the new Technical Adviser for the Super Eagles with FIFA's assistance, an appointment that unfortunately never materialized due to conflicting choices from the then Minister of Sports. This principled stand garnered him public support, including a demonstration led by a THISDAY Newspaper correspondent in Kano, highlighting his earned high esteem rather than any attempts to buy loyalty.
Beyond his formal roles, Galadima was instrumental in the creation of Kano Pillars Football Club in 1991, a club that would later announce his passing. Even after leaving active service, his dedication to his community continued as he was turbaned as the Galadiman Fagge, serving as the community head of his Fagge community in Kano State. His personal life reflected his modesty; despite his high office, he was known to use a fairly used Passat Jetta at home, never using his brand new official Peugeot 406 beyond office hours, contrasting sharply with many in similar positions.
Tributes have poured in from across Nigeria. President Bola Tinubu expressed profound sadness, describing Galadima's death as a loss to sports administration and the nation, acknowledging his significant contributions to Nigerian football at both grassroots and elite levels. Mallam Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission (NSC) and a mentee of Galadima, remembered him as a mentor, father figure, and a selfless patriot who consistently prioritized national interest and worked for the collective good, building structures designed to endure. Alh. Ibrahim Musa Gusau, President of the NFF, lamented the loss of a mentor, praising Galadima as an epitome of high dignity, diligence, and integrity, whose fatherly advice and wisdom would be dearly missed.
Alhaji Ibrahim Galadima was laid to rest in Kano following Janaza prayers attended by a host of distinguished personalities, including HRH Aminu Bayero, former Governor Ibrahim Shekarau, H.E Ali Saad Birnin Kudu, SSG Kaduna State, and current sports leaders like Shehu Dikko and Ibrahim Musa Gusau. His legacy as a guiding light, a man of unyielding principles, and a dedicated servant of both sports and his nation will undoubtedly be remembered for generations.
