Nigeria Mourns: Former Chief Justice Tanko Muhammad Dies at 71, Supreme Court Confirms Loss

Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, a former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), has passed away at the age of 71. He reportedly died at a hospital in Saudi Arabia, approximately two weeks before his 72nd birthday, which falls on December 31.
The news of his demise, which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, was confirmed by several prominent entities across Nigeria. The Nigerian Association of Muslim Law Students (NAMLAS) issued a condolence statement in Abuja, titled “NAMLAS Condolence Message on the Passing of Hon. Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, GCON, Former Chief Justice of Nigeria,” describing his death as a significant and monumental loss to the country, the Nigerian judiciary, the legal profession, and the Muslim Ummah.
Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed also expressed profound sorrow, confirming Justice Muhammad’s passing through his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado. Governor Mohammed noted that Justice Muhammad, an illustrious son of Bauchi State, died after a prolonged illness for which he had been receiving medical care in Saudi Arabia. The Governor highlighted the former CJN's life of service, integrity, and devotion to justice, recalling his steady rise through the judicial ranks from a High Court Judge to Justice of the Court of Appeal, Justice of the Supreme Court, and ultimately Chief Justice of Nigeria from 2019 to 2022. Governor Mohammed further stated that Justice Muhammad earned nationwide respect for his legal expertise, principled leadership, and significant contributions to strengthening Nigeria’s judicial system, evidenced by the national honour of Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger (GCON).
The Supreme Court of Nigeria formally confirmed the death of its 17th Chief Justice, Justice Ibrahim Tanko Muhammad, through a statement by its Director of Information and Public Relations, Dr Akande Festus. The statement underscored Justice Tanko's tenure as Chief Justice from 2019 to 2022, which was marked by an unwavering commitment to the rule of law, judicial independence, and the fair administration of justice. The Supreme Court acknowledged his remarkable contributions, including strengthening the appellate system and procedural efficiency, advocating for the professional development of judges and judicial staff, and fostering a culture of transparency and accountability within the judiciary. His keen intellect and compassionate demeanor earned him the respect of legal professionals and citizens alike, profoundly shaping Nigeria’s legal landscape.
