Nigeria has commenced early preparations for the 2028 Olympic Games, with a high-level delegation attending a crucial pre-Games meeting in Los Angeles, United States. The delegation, which included Bukola Olopade, Director-General of the National Sports Commission (NSC), and Habu Gumel, President of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC), joined representatives from other nations and Olympic stakeholders. This meeting serves as a vital platform for participating countries to engage with organizers, exchange pertinent information, and coordinate their preparations for the Games, which are scheduled to take place from 14 to 30 July 2028.
According to a statement released by Kola Daniel, Senior Assistant on Media to the NSC Director-General, Bukola Olopade underscored the critical importance of early engagement with Olympic organizers for Nigeria's preparatory efforts. He emphasized that successful Olympic preparation extends beyond athletes' arrival at the venue, requiring deliberate planning, robust institutional coordination, and sustained interaction with the Olympic movement. Olopade articulated Nigeria's intention to leverage lessons learned from previous Olympic Games to fortify its preparations, ensuring athletes receive adequate support, world-class facilities, and abundant competitive opportunities.
Olopade further stated, "Our ambition is not simply to participate, but to prepare thoroughly and compete with distinction." The active participation of both Olopade and Gumel at the meeting highlights the indispensable need for collaborative efforts between the NSC, which is responsible for overseeing sports development, and the NOC in orchestrating Nigeria's comprehensive Olympic preparations. This coordinated approach is deemed essential for achieving the country's athletic aspirations.
Los Angeles is set to host the Summer Olympics for an unprecedented third time, having previously welcomed the Games in 1932 and 1984. The 2028 edition will bring together athletes globally to compete across numerous sporting disciplines. For Nigeria, this early engagement signifies a proactive step by its sports authorities to establish a cohesive preparation program specifically designed to elevate Team Nigeria's competitiveness on the international stage. The NSC and NOC are expected to work in close partnership on all aspects of planning and preparations leading up to the Games, with a primary focus on maximizing athlete performance.
