Nigeria Dominates Commonwealth Games in Glasgow: Nathaniel & Onwuzurike Secure Gold and Silver!

Team Nigeria has continued its impressive run at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, securing multiple medals on Friday night, highlighted by a gold from Ezekiel Nathaniel in the men’s 400m hurdles and a silver from Udodi Onwuzurike in the men’s 200 metres. These notable achievements have propelled Nigeria’s medal tally to 18, comprising nine gold, six silver, and three bronze, marking one of the country’s most successful performances in Commonwealth Games history.

Ezekiel Nathaniel, 23, completed a remarkable turnaround from his previous disappointment at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games by clinching the men’s 400m hurdles title. Nathaniel delivered a commanding display, clocking an impressive 48.47 seconds to finish ahead of England’s Jake Minshull, who secured silver in 48.99 seconds, and Jamaica’s Assinie Wilson, who took bronze in 49.22 seconds. His victory marks a stunning redemption, as he had finished sixth in the same event in Birmingham with a time of 51.38 seconds. Having emerged as the fastest qualifier for the final, the Baylor University athlete justified his favourite’s tag by controlling the race from the outset and powering clear in the closing stages. This triumph caps an extraordinary rise for Nathaniel, who has broken Nigeria’s 35-year-old national record, won the NCAA title, set the African indoor 400m record, reached the World Championships final, and lowered his personal best to an outstanding 47.11 seconds.

Following Nathaniel’s gold, Udodi Onwuzurike added to Nigeria’s success by sprinting to a silver medal in the men’s 200 metres. Onwuzurike delivered one of the standout performances of the championships in the final, clocking a season’s best of 20.09 seconds from the outside lane eight. He finished behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who claimed the gold in 19.96 seconds, ensuring Nigeria maintained its strong showing in the sprint events.

In other events, Jami Schlueter rounded off an encouraging Commonwealth Games debut by finishing seventh in the men’s decathlon. Schlueter accumulated a total of 7,665 points across the ten events. He had occupied fourth place after the opening day and remained among the leading contenders through six events before securing a commendable top-seven finish in one of athletics’ most demanding disciplines.

The National Sports Commission has lauded another productive day for Team Nigeria, whose athletes have consistently delivered across various disciplines throughout the Games. The success is partly attributed to the Commission’s significant investment in athlete preparation, welfare, high-performance training camps, and performance incentives. With 18 medals now secured, Team Nigeria heads into the closing stages of the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games with growing confidence and the ambition of further adding to its impressive medal collection.
