President Bola Tinubu extended the initial seven-day mourning period to facilitate nationwide reflection on Buhari’s legacy.

The former leader’s remains will arrive at Katsina Airport Tuesday noon for immediate transfer to his hometown Daura, where Islamic burial rites will commence at 2 p.m., Katsina Governor Dikko Radda confirmed Monday. The ceremony adheres to Islamic traditions requiring swift interment, cleric Abdullahi Garangamawa told BBC.

Interior Minister Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo stated the holiday allows citizens to “reflect on his life, leadership, and values.” Tributes poured in from political rivals, including ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, who praised Buhari’s “selfless commitment,” and former military ruler Ibrahim Babangida, who called him a “moral compass.”

Tinubu will attend the Daura funeral after ordering flags flown at half-mast nationwide since Sunday. The simple ceremony contrasts with state funerals, honoring Buhari’s modest public persona. The former military leader made history in 2015 as Nigeria’s first opposition candidate to unseat an incumbent president.
