Niger Catholic School Kidnappings: 100 Rescued, But Over 100 Children Still Trapped

On November 21, armed gangs launched an attack on St. Mary's Catholic School in Papiri community, Niger State, leading to the abduction of 303 schoolchildren and 12 of their teachers, totaling 315 captives. The assailants, riding on motorbikes, invaded the school around 2:00 a.m. and operated for nearly three hours, herding their victims into surrounding forests after moving from dormitory to dormitory.
In the immediate aftermath, 50 students managed to escape within the first 24 hours. This mass abduction quickly prompted a national security emergency, underscoring the severe threat faced by schools in Nigeria's conflict-battered northern region.
Recently, a total of 100 schoolchildren who had been abducted were successfully released. The Christian Association of Nigeria confirmed their freedom, and arrangements were made for their transport to Minna, the state capital, to meet with officials. While the release brought relief, details on how the 100 schoolchildren were freed or if any arrests were made were not immediately clear.
Niger State Governor Mohammed Umar Bago officially received the 100 rescued students at Government House, Minna. Wing Commander Abdullahi Idi Hong, representing the National Security Adviser (NSA) Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, formally handed over the children to the governor. The NSA emphasized the Federal Government's unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety of every Nigerian community and pledged continued policies to protect Nigerian children.
Governor Bago expressed profound gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, the NSA, and other partners for their instrumental roles in securing the safe release of the students. He described the development as fundamental in redefining the state's history and reiterated calls for prayers for the safe return of the remaining students and their teachers still held captive, assuring their eventual reunification with their families.
President Bola Tinubu also lauded the security agencies for their tireless efforts in securing the freedom of the 100 students from Papiri Catholic School. Through his Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the President expressed joy over the safe return and issued a strong directive to security agencies to ensure the swift release of the remaining 115 students and their teachers. President Tinubu assured parents of close collaboration between the federal and Niger State governments to reunite all abducted students with their families. He further directed that security forces, in conjunction with governors, must prevent future kidnappings, ensuring that children are no longer
