NiDCOM demands probe into death of Nigerian in Luxembourg police custody

Published 1 month ago2 minute read

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has pledged to collaborate with the Nigerian embassy in Belgium to press for a thorough investigation into the death of Nigerian national Daniel Eheri, who reportedly died in the custody of the Luxembourg Police, Grand-Ducale.

In a statement by NiDCOM’s Director of Media and Public Relations, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the commission, strongly condemned the allegation of Eheri’s death under police custody.

She expressed condolences to the deceased’s family and the Nigerian community in Luxembourg, assuring that the commission would work with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served.

Dabiri-Erewa emphasised NiDCOM’s commitment to demanding a transparent inquiry into the circumstances of Eheri’s death through the Nigerian embassy in Belgium.

The Nigerian community in Luxembourg claimed to have sent a written petition to the Federal Government of Nigeria, urging an urgent probe into the alleged extrajudicial killing.

The petition, titled “Case of an Extrajudicial Killing of a Nigerian by the Police Authority of Luxembourg,” was reportedly addressed to Dabiri-Erewa and signed by Mr Sunday Adekolu, the National Coordinator of the Nigerian Community in Luxembourg.

According to the petition, Eheri was arrested on February 10, 2025, while in possession of foodstuffs, and was confirmed dead the following day. It noted that Luxembourg authorities had failed to provide an explanation for the death.

“The late Eheri Daniel was a Nigerian with an untainted record in Luxembourg and a residence permit holder,” Adekolu stated. He called on the Nigerian government to ensure the case receives proper attention, warning against a recurrence of such incidents.

“To prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg, there must be transparency and justice in the handling of this case,” Adekolu said.

He further revealed that Nigeria’s Ambassador to Belgium, Obinna Chiedu Onowu, whose jurisdiction includes Luxembourg, had sent two letters concerning the case but had received no official response.

Adekolu appealed to NiDCOM for urgent assistance in clarifying the facts surrounding Eheri’s death and persuading Luxembourg authorities to conduct an autopsy.

“We, the Nigerian community in Luxembourg, do hereby seek your urgent assistance on the matter, to put records in the right perspective, to persuade the Luxembourg Police Grand-Ducale into conducting an autopsy on the remains of Eheri Daniel, and to sensitise the Luxembourg Police on measures to prevent a recurrence of such a dastardly act of inhumanity against our people here in Luxembourg in the future,” the petition read.
