NGF mourns Buhari, calls him national political icon

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) has described the late former President Muhammadu Buhari as more than a political leader, calling him a national figure whose life was defined by humility, moral courage, and a deep commitment to public service.

In a statement issued on Sunday by the Forum’s chairman and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, the NGF said Buhari’s passing marked a profound loss not only for Nigeria but for the African continent.

“This death is a significant depletion in the rank of Africa’s all-time great men,” the statement read. “Muhammadu Buhari was not just a former president or military leader; he was a national political leader with profound moral courage, character, and amazing sense of duty. He would be remembered for his humility, strategic patience, and modest lifestyle.”

Buhari died on Sunday, July 13, at the age of 82 in a clinic in London, United Kingdom, following a prolonged illness. His death was announced by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, who confirmed that the former president died in the afternoon after weeks of observation and treatment abroad.

Buhari, a retired major general, first led Nigeria as military head of state between 1983 and 1985 before returning as a democratically elected president in 2015. He served two terms before leaving office in 2023. His administration was marked by a focus on anti-corruption, economic reforms, and a military-led approach to tackling insecurity.

The NGF extended condolences to President Bola Tinubu, describing him as a close associate of the late leader, and also commiserated with the former first lady, Aisha Buhari, the rest of the Buhari family, and the Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umar Radda.

“We ask Allaah, who gives and takes life, to ease the account of His servant, Muhammadu Buhari, widen and lighten up his grave, admit him to Al-Jannah Firdaus, and bless the family and the nation with the patience to go through this phase,” AbdulRazaq said.

Funeral arrangements for the late former president are expected to be announced soon.
