Newcastle Rocks Man City: Howe Demands Follow-Up, Guardiola Plots Changes
)
Manchester City suffered a 2-1 defeat to Newcastle at St James' Park, a result that prompted manager Pep Guardiola to address a critical concern regarding his team's goal-scoring efficiency. Guardiola emphasized that profligacy in front of goal cost them the match against Eddie Howe's side. Despite numerous opportunities, including "unforgivable chances" missed by key players like Erling Haaland and Phil Foden, City managed only a deflected Ruben Dias shot as their lone goal.
Post-match, Guardiola analyzed the "tight game," acknowledging that both teams had chances but the more clinical side ultimately triumphed. He stressed the paramount importance of scoring goals, stating, "We have to score more goals. Our players have the ability and quality to do it." He also noted the difficulty after Newcastle scored their second, especially with Sven Botman on the pitch and a deep defense, making it harder for City to break through.
From Newcastle's perspective, manager Eddie Howe hailed the 2-1 victory as a morale-boosting performance, arguably their best of the season to date, ending a run of two Premier League defeats. However, Howe swiftly warned his players that the win would count for little if not followed by positive results against Marseille in the Champions League and Everton in the league. Facing an "unrelenting schedule" until the end of January, Howe underscored the need for players to recover and "regroup and go again."
The match saw Harvey Barnes emerge as the hero for Newcastle, securing a brace. Barnes had missed earlier opportunities but eventually beat Gianluigi Donnarumma after exchanging passes with Bruno Guimarães. Ruben Dias equalized for City within five minutes, but Barnes then stabbed home the winner with 20 minutes remaining. Howe particularly praised the "character" his team displayed to defend their slim advantage, including through eight minutes of stoppage time. He noted that the team had possibly "rediscovered its edge," defined as "doing everything it takes to win," within the rules.
In terms of player updates for Newcastle, full-backs Lewis Hall and Tino Livramento impressed upon their return to the starting line-up from injury, though Hall later limped off with cramp. Anthony Gordon was close to readiness but not quite fit for the match due to a hip problem, while Kieran Trippier was sidelined after damaging a hamstring in training. Howe indicated uncertainty regarding Trippier's return, awaiting medical feedback, but expected Gordon to be ready in the coming days.
