During what some are calling the best defensive inning in recent Mets memory, pitcher David Peterson could only smile as Mark Vientos, Francisco Lindor, and Tyrone Taylor combined for an impressive display in the fourth inning of the Mets’ 8-3 victory over the Diamondbacks. In rapid succession, Arizona’s Randal Grichuk, Lourdes Gurriel Jr., and Eugenio Suarez each hit balls at 100 mph or harder, yet each resulted in an out.

Grichuk’s ground ball was deflected by Vientos at third base, who dove for the ball, sending it toward Lindor at shortstop. Lindor made a backhanded stop and threw to first, catching Grichuk off guard. Gurriel then hit a line drive to left-centerfield, where Taylor, shaded toward rightfield, sprinted across centerfield, dove, and made a backhanded catch, losing his hat in the process. Suarez followed with a 112 mph hit to Lindor, who made a smooth backhanded pick.

The Mets (21-9) had already established a seven-run lead against Diamondbacks’ (15-14) pitcher Eduardo Rodriguez, with home runs from Lindor, Starling Marte, and Pete Alonso. Alonso’s RBI tied Ed Kranepool for fifth on the Mets’ all-time list, and he also made three diving stops at first base.

In another game, the Yankees achieved a remarkable feat, hitting back-to-back-to-back home runs off Orioles pitcher Kyle Gibson, with Trent Grisham, Aaron Judge, and Ben Rice doing the honors in the first inning of their 15-3 win over the Orioles. This made the Yankees the first team to hit three homers to start a game twice in the same season. Gibson gave up four homers in the first, with Cody Bellinger also hitting one out.

The Yankees had a five-run first inning and hit four home runs, mirroring their March 29 game where they hit a franchise-record nine homers. Austin Wells added another home run in the ninth. Carlos Rodon pitched six innings, allowing two runs on two hits, improving to 4-3 with a 3.43 ERA. Rice had three hits and two RBIs, Bellinger had two hits and three RBIs, and Goldschmidt and Oswald Peraza each had two hits and two RBIs.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled but left the game after sliding into third base and feeling something in his right oblique. He will be evaluated in New York. DJ LeMahieu's rehab assignment is on hold after receiving a cortisone shot for his hip, with his return expected later in the week.
