New Skies: Mozambique and Kenya Forge Direct Flight Link

Mozambique and Kenya are set to revive direct flights between Maputo and Nairobi, following high-level talks in Nairobi. Mozambican President Daniel Chapo emphasized the link’s importance for business partnerships and regional cooperation.

The announcement coincided with the Kenya International Investment Conference, where $2.9 billion in deals were signed.

Direct flights would significantly reduce travel times, boost tourism, and simplify dual-destination packages. Mozambique’s scenic coastlines and Kenya’s safari circuits make the route attractive for travelers and investors alike.

Kenya’s Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi highlighted that past flights in 2024 enhanced trade and people-to-people exchanges but faced operational challenges. Current talks aim to ensure long-term sustainability.

Discussions also covered energy cooperation, infrastructure, and agricultural trade. Both nations plan to operationalize the Kenya-Mozambique Business Forum and a Joint Technical Committee to remove trade barriers.

If successful, these flights could transform regional travel, stimulate tourism flows, and open new opportunities for African businesses. President Chapo invited President William Ruto for a reciprocal visit, signaling ongoing commitment to intra-continental connectivity.
