New Amityville Movie Gets Directors Behind 2022's Most Experimental Horror Movie With 92% Rating

Published 18 hours ago3 minute read

The creators of Deadstream, a wildly inventive horror-comedy from 2022, are set to breathe new life into one of the most famous haunted house franchises of all time! Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the writer-director duo who are known for their found-footage cult hit, are now at the helm of an upcoming Amityville movie (via Deadline).

Horror fans, get ready because the franchise is officially getting a makeover at the hands of a powerhouse team. We’ll finally have a fresh new take on the saga, leaving behind every story connected to the house. So, let’s look at all the details about the project so far and understand why we can trust the Winters with this movie.

Joseph and Vanessa Winter will team up with BoulderLight Pictures for their latest movie, and the production has been fast-tracked. While the details about the plot are still under wraps, what we know is that it won’t be a typical trip to 112 Ocean Avenue. The upcoming movie has something very different in store for us, as it won’t revisit the DeFeo murders or the controversial hauntings experienced by George and Kathy Lutz.

These were the stories that originally inspired the books and the film franchise. However, the Winters will dive straight into the legend of the house itself and treat it like a public domain folklore. So, they’re breaking away from the many sequels, spin-offs, and remakes, with one of them even featuring Ryan Reynolds.

The original movie, based on the novel, was a hit, but there were debates about whether the Lutz family had fabricated their experience and whether it was all based on a true horror story. Despite this, the house itself is one of the most recognizable paranormal landscapes in America, and perfect as a canvas to build a novel tale.

If you’re unfamiliar with just how amazing Joseph and Vanessa Winter are, let’s fix that immediately! Their breakout hit was Deadstream, which quickly became one of the most-talked-about horror debuts in recent memory.

The 92% rated (critic score) movie on Rotten Tomatoes follows a disgraced internet personality, Shawn Ruddy (played by Joseph Winter himself), who livestreams an overnight stay in a haunted house to win back his followers. However, things spiral out of control when he encounters actual supernatural forces.

They’ve brilliantly shown it in a found-footage style project that’s filmed as a real-time live stream, where chat pop-ups and glitches add to the immersion. Plus, the way it balances being hilarious and creepy is genuinely commendable.

The duo has the talent to create amazing movies on a dirt-cheap budget, without compromising creativity. And if Deadstream was any indication, we can expect a self-aware and subversive haunted house story in this new Amityville entry. So, are you ready for a whole new kind of horror?
