Netflix has significantly integrated generative AI into its production pipeline, with approximately 300 programs across its library utilizing the technology so far this year. This extensive application spans every phase of a program's creation, from initial concept and pre-visualization through to post-production and final release. The streaming giant highlighted several specific programs that have benefited from this technology, including the Indian sports thriller series “Glory,” the Brazilian soccer miniseries “Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri,” and the American Revolution-focused docuseries “The American Experiment.” Netflix noted that AI played a crucial role in crafting “highly complex sequences,” such as enhancing crowd sizes and intricate battle scenes, which might have otherwise been difficult or impossible to achieve.

According to Netflix, the adoption of generative AI tools is driven by the goal of delivering superior quality output more rapidly and at a reduced cost compared to conventional production methods. In certain instances, the company stated that productions would have been compelled to omit key shots and sequences if not for the availability of GenAI technology. This strategic emphasis on AI was revealed during Netflix’s second-quarter earnings report, where the company announced a robust Q2 revenue of $12.56 billion, marking a 13.4% year-over-year increase, alongside a net income of $3.4 billion, or 80 cents per share.

Netflix's commitment to AI extends beyond program production, influencing various other aspects of its business. The company leverages AI to improve user recommendations for new titles, bolster its advertising business, and facilitate the development of an AI animation studio. A notable move in this direction was the acquisition in March of InterPositive, a company co-founded by Ben Affleck. Netflix stated that InterPositive would furnish filmmakers with advanced AI tools for use throughout film and TV productions.

During the company’s earnings call, Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos discussed the early positive impact of the InterPositive deal and other in-house AI tools. Sarandos emphasized that AI tools empower “creatives better tools to bring their visions to life.” He cited a specific example from “The American Experiment,” where 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage “expanded the scope of the series that just wouldn’t have been feasible before” and was produced “twice as fast and at half the cost of previous options.”

Despite the significant integration of AI, Sarandos underscored that Netflix's intention is not to replace creative professionals.
