Neeraj Chopra Breaches 90m Mark; Modi Reacts

Neeraj Chopra finally achieved the elusive 90m mark in javelin throw at the Doha Diamond League 2025, a feat that had been a mental block for him despite winning numerous accolades, including an Olympic gold medal, World Championship, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. His 90.23m throw came on his third attempt, setting a new national record and surpassing his previous best of 89.94m achieved at the Stockholm Diamond League two years prior. This achievement makes him the 25th athlete in history to cross the 90m threshold in men's javelin.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Neeraj on X, acknowledging his relentless dedication, discipline, and passion. However, despite this milestone, Neeraj finished second in the event, behind Germany's Julian Weber, who achieved a personal best of 91.06m.
Neeraj expressed mixed feelings, stating his happiness for achieving the 90m mark but also noting his second-place finish, reminiscent of past competitions. He is currently training under Jan Zelezny, the legendary Czech thrower and world record holder, who accompanied him to Doha, predicting his 90m achievement.
Neeraj's throw is the third-best by an Asian, trailing Pakistan's Arshad Nadeem and Chinese Taipei's Chao-Tsun Cheng. Despite Weber's victory, Neeraj expressed happiness for Weber, acknowledging their shared pursuit of the 90m mark. He remains confident for future competitions, anticipating even greater throws.
India's Kishore Jena finished eighth with a best throw of 78.60m, marking his second Diamond League appearance.
